What does 1pt in the stock market index represent?

For example, the Dow Jones is at around 13000, Hang Seng is at 27000. What does it represent?

Public Comments

  1. POINTS, or value per share.
  2. I believe the value of the index is the total value of 1 share of each stock in that index. In other words, if you added up the value of each stock in the Dow Jones, it would total $13,000.
  3. those numbers are an average of the stocks that are in the index, but based on a weight for that stock, the numbers get funny when a stock splits, then the stock price is less, but the 'weight' in the index doesnt change,, check out www.thewallstreethunter.com they have an example of the weighted index, and you can see how different stocks are heavier than others,, its at the bottom of the page under company profiles... Good luck
