Why does company profitability affect stock value? Why does company profitability affect stock value? I'm trying to understand why investors CARE about company profitability when determining the prices to buy/sell stock at. With my (incomplete) understanding, it would seem that they would just want to ignore the company's profitability, and trade their stock as a side thing, detached from the company's profits, etc... so therefor I know that I'm missing something, because it's not like that.

When stock value plunges, what happens with your stock? What I'm trying to say is: Say you have 10 stocks of Coca-cola at 3$ a share. The market crashes and the value plummets to .$50 a share. Technically, you've lost 25 dollars. Can you just keep the $.50 stocks in the market and wait for them to rise again? I don't see how you lose money in the stock market if you never lose the stock. What prevents someone from holding on to their stock and riding out the ups and downs until a good period to sell arises?
