Is there a correlation between democratic or republican governments and the stock index? The ups and downs of stock indexes are usually seen as indicators of business climate. It is also thought that republican governments tend to be more pro-business than democratic ones. So it could be expected that stock indexes perform better in republican presidential terms than in democratic ones. But of course, many other factors could offset this influence. So the question may be rephrased as: Is there empirical evidence of a correlation between the performance of the stock markets and the party in power?
How to use turbotax to report stock index option trading? For index option trading, there is a 60/40 rule. 60 percent of the profit is considered long term capital gain. 40 percent is considered short term capital gain. Does anyone how to report this in turbox so that turbotax knows the 60 percent part is for long term capital gain? Thanks. Thanks. BTW, I use turbotax online. How do I manually override with "long term capital gain"?
How do I get started investing in stock index funds without paying those high initial investment minimums? Fidelity's minimum for an IRA is $2500. I'd like to invest in three index funds. I have $4500 to invest. Can I invest 2500 in the first fund, then withdraw 1500 leaving 1000 in, invest 2500 in the second, then withdraw 1500, so this leaves me with 2500 in hand to invest in the third. Then even everything out so I have equal amounts in each. Please help I'd like to get started soon but can this work. Thanks in advance for your answers

Does a stock price index reflect the actual value of a market index based portfolio? If I were to buy a portfolio of stocks of, say, $ 10,000, with the same composition and in the same proportions as the S&P500 and, after one year that index had a variation of, say, +15%, would my portfolio be worth exactly $11,500? If not, why?

Since stock index funds buy the same stocks as the index, won't their prices become artificially inflated? My understanding of the DOW or S&P500 index funds is that if GE represents say 1% of the S&P500, it will represent 1% of the value of the S&P500 index funds. Since many people invest in these index funds to represent the market, won't any company in the index be artificially inflated in price due to heightened demand? Another way to ask this is: Do companies that join an index experience a bump in share price & do companies that leave experience a drop within a short amount of time? Thanks!
Stock Index Long Term Chart web sites? I`m trying to find a good web site that give long term historical charts of the major world stock indexes over the last 25 years at least. Trying to put the current melt down into some perspective I guess. Its surprisingly hard to find a site that does this. Most just give short term charting details for individual stocks. I want to look at the Dow Jones, SnP, All Ords, Footsie etc as a whole.
stock index futures and index options? What's the difference between a stock index future and an index option? If I purchase the right to buy an S & P 500 future at $300 per share and the index goes up to $450 per share by the date of expiration of the futures contract, I make a loss of $150. How would it look like and how would the process work if I went for an index option in the above case? In addition, do I make the whole payment right when purchasing the right to buy / sell in futures contracts as well as options?

Stock index values in relation to inflation? I read somewhere recently that there has been a posited "stock crash" since 2000. The premise of the writer was that because some stock indexes - I think the Dow Jones was used - are below their peaks, they have actually crashed in reality, because of the effect of inflation. So, while the media gets excited that an index is near "record highs", it may be that it is in fact 10-15% down since 2000, as this is the amount of inflation in this period. This sounds sensible to me, but... is it correct? What I am not clear in is the composition and calculation of the indexes. Is there something inherent in them that adjusts for or in other way reduces the effect of inflation? So... if an index is at 10,000 right now and we have 10% inflation in the next year, would the index need to be at 11,000 to actually remain at par? Thanks!
