Need help choosing a Vanguard Fund? Hi all! I am 30 years old and have just started investing a few months ago. I was broke until I was 28 so that caused the late start. Anyways, here is my portfolio: 10K in Vanguard Total Stock Market Index 10K in Vanguard Total International Stock Index (additional $300 in each monthly) 4K in Vanguard Target Retirement 2040 (additional $333 monthly) 15K in Emigrantdirect CD at 5.20 APY I know I probably have too much in International Stock. I am more a risk taker but I think I need to diversified my portfolio a bit. I have another 15K to invest now, what should I buy from Vanguard? I am thinking about Star Fund, Vanguard Strategic Equity Fund, Value Index Fund, U.S. Value Fund, Wellington and Windsor I or II. Once the 15K in CD is matured, I will put the money in Vanguard as well. Thank you for your help.

For the experts, how's this looking for a Vanguard index fund portfolio? Hi everyone, I'm 25 and realized how important it is to start investing at a young age...I've heard good things about Vanguard Index funds due to their low costs...I've decided to put my money in the following funds and ETFs accordingly and adding little every month (I have a Vanguard account to avoid commission fees). VTSMX (Total Stock Market): $3000 - I picked this one over the big VFINX because this one has more diversification (3500 stocks vs 500) plus already has the 500 stocks VFINX has. Same expense at 0.15%. VGTSX (Total International Stock): $3000 Expense 0.27% NAESX (Small-Cap): $3000 Expense 0.22% VGSIX (Real estate investment trusts): $3000 Expense 0.20% ETFS Materials (VAW) $1000 Expense 0.22% Emerging Markets (VWO) $1000 Expense 0.25% Utilities (VPU) $1000 Expense 0.22% Energy (VDE) $1000 Expense 0.22% Some of the ETF related Index funds (i.e. emerging markets) have purchase fees of $750 and for the ETF it's free so I went this way. I think this is pretty diversified. Also, I will be investing some in individual stocks but only after I have mastered the art of individual stock investing. For now, index funds are the best way to go. I've also added $5300 to Vanguard's Target 2050 Retirement Fund. Can I get your thoughts on this portfolio? Thanks in advance!! :)

My choices of funds are these: Dodge & Cox International Stock Fund, Vanguard 500 Index, Vanguard Total Bond Market Index, Vanguard Total Intl Stock Index Fund and, Key Guaranteed Portfolio Fund, and Vanguard Extended Market Idx. Please don't say see a financial adviser. I have had many and none had done any better than just going with "safe" funds mostly in Vanguard family. Thanks

Is this a good way to invest my money? I'm thinking of taking somebodies advice and putting about 3 quarters of my money in the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund, and then putting the other quarter in the Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund. I keep putting off investing my money because I didn't know where to start, but then somebody recommended putting all of my money into just these two index funds. The two funds automatically diversify your money, or so it would seem. Any thoughts?

Which Vanguard fund should I invest in for? (5 yrs +, mod-high risk)? I have a Vanguard account and currently own shares of the Total Stock Market Index (doing OK), Total International Stock Market Index (not too happy), GAAEX not happy at all) Target Retirement 2045. 70% of my money is in Money Market fund and I want to place most of it in something more risky/rewarding since I won't be needing that money for at least 10-15 years. Should I just invest more in the Total Stock Market Index or are there better ones that I can invest in for my goals?

Vanguard Target Retirment funds V.S. managing your own investments? I am 21 years old and I am currently investing in the Vanguard Total Stock Market index fund. I have been thinking about moving the money to the target retirement fund for my age, I seriously get the impression though that vanguard allocates too much to very low risk investments and too fast, If i were to invest it in right now i think its about 7% bonds, and it increases every year till retirement. Does anyone else thing that those funds are a little too cautious? I was thinking about also just sticking with Total Stock Market Index and maybe add a International index fund as well, what do you guys think? Is there a specific age where I should start worrying about risk and shifting to bonds, etc.?

How should I allocate my 401(k)? I asked this before, but my company (Darden Restaurants) has changed some of the funds they offer, so I wanted to double check. Darden offers a variable match on the first 6% of income, which is the amount I contribute (this ends up being approx. $25 per week). I am 24 years old, and am willing to take on a good amount of risk since I have a long time before retirement, and understand that higher risk typically equals higher return in the long run. Here are my fund options: Vanguard Target Retirement Funds Harbor Capital Appreciation (Instl) Vanguard Total Bond Market Index # Vanguard Extended Market / INV # Vanguard Total Intl Stock Index Inv # + Vanguard Institutional Index Fund # Aston/Tamro Small Cap/I RVST Stable Capital Fund II Darden Company Stock Fund PIMCO Total Return Fund (Inst) Wellington Trust Mid Cap Opp Series III American Funds EuroPacific Growth (R6) # Davis New York Venture Fund (Y) This is my current allocation: Harbor Capital 30% Wellington 30% EuroPacific 30% PIMCO 10% I've noticed that this mix, over the past year or so, has consistently underperformed the S&P, which is why I'm asking y'all's opinions :) I think I want more international exposure, but maybe you can shed some light.. How do y'all recommend I allocate, given the options? Thanks! Chris So I should eliminate Large Cap funds altogether? How about this for a new mix: Wellington 30% Aston/TAMRO 30% Europacific 30% PIMCO 10% So that would be 30% mid, 30% small, 30% international and 10% bond. Whenever I change my allocation, should I move the money already in the previous funds into the new ones? Or just leave them, and have future contributions go to the new mix? Thanks for all your help!! -C

Is having a 403(b) a Roth IRA and a small DRIP portfolio too much? Let me start off by say that I don't earn much money, but I plan on improving that situation in future years! 1. I have a 403(b) at work, fees are a little high and fund selection is slim, I have selected the 3 index funds. 2. To balance things out I have a Vanguard Roth IRA with the Total International Index Fund (Non US). 3. I am also slowly assembling a small DRIP stock portfolio with the likes of PEP, PFE, PG and LMT. I have picked these stocks as they seem to have strong dividend potential and the DRIP plans have VERY low fees. NOW in the grand scheme of things is all of this overkill or spreading my meager earnings in too many directions? Thank you Yahoo Investing Community!
