I am a US citizen who would like to buy a stock on the Bombay Stock Exchange. How can I do this? I have looked at various US brokers and they do not seem to offer this service. Additionally I have spoken to several friends from India who suggest only Indian citizens or NRIs can do this. Some have suggested I could send cash to a friend in India (whom I trust implicitly) to manage the investment for me. This does not seem above board and I will not pursue this avenue. Are there any legitimate methods with reasonable fees that enable me to buy a specific stock of interest on the BSE? (not an index fund or a mutual fund). Thanks.
The BSE Sensex in Indian Stock Market was 666 points up at the closure time yesterday, Is this an indication ? Later the Sensex was corrected to see that its 639 points up. Has this got something to do with the future of Indian Markets, Business and Politics ? Conventional Christians do have some apprehensions with the number 666. But with Sanathana Dharma or Hinduism, Rajasic and Tamasic Qualities (the so called Satanic/Hellish Qualities as described by so called conventional / traditional Christians) are also a part of Prakrithi, (Maya, the Ultimate Delusion of God) just like the quality of Satva Guna, as described heavenly by Christians. You may just ponder over lil further into the different links provided for to get some clarity into the differing aspirations of different beliefs of different God fearing people on how God should be. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ake6_yace9noUJcf_KpV69Lty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20070619213240AAzqBzQ Is it possible for God to fulfill all the aspirations of God fearing and devoted people of differing faiths while coming again ? The expectation with this Question is answers with varying imaginations connecting everything socially, politically and economically in a big imaginative string addressing all concerns of God fearing people as what course God might take on further ? Fulfilling the aspirations of all the Faithful people, blessing the meek and the good and punishing the wicked and the bad, yet addressing all concerns.. Earlier the business interests of big corporates and growth rates of GDP did not affect the common man much, becuse he was not a very intensive participant with businesses other than agriculture. Now the field has become open so much that the common man is also participating in shares/stock markets in a big way individually and also thru different mutual funds and life insurance companies penetrating to the grass root levels even in villages. So a stock market crash is perhaps not just the burning of fingers of the elete class only, but a crash in Stock Markets in India can harm even the intersts of a common man who has by now acquired something more than just the tieing chains at stake to loose. The backtracking from the envisaged route to basic infrastructure development like Roads and Power by the current Indian Government (like The abandonment of Pradhana Manthri Sadak Yojana, meaning The Prime Minister's Road Development Project) and the nuclear stad off for sustained 10 to 12 stand off to sustain 10 to 12 % growth further in future... Can these factors lead to a Great Stock Market Crash in India, burning the common man severely, even taking away the hard earned money thru life insurance corporations, mutual funds and other financial institutions that tempted with greed of lucrative earnings. Perhaps it should be remembered that Satan (Rajasic and Tamasic Qualities) always tempts and delude with illusions of Maya giving a lot of color. Is the Left in India acclerating the prospect of Crash in Stock Market with no other credible alternative and solutions for a short to medium term planning for Infrastructure Development for sustaining the Growth ?? Are the big indicators leading into the confirmation that the Satan's rule (of Rajas and Tamas) for Three and a half years at pinnacle as indicated in Bible on the most Spiritually Powerful Nation of this World coming into a Grand Finale after Its three and a half years tenure ? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aj.gtSjqjLbypDKumYOKMcUjzKIX?qid=20070405080511AAaMMhU What's your take with a macro level observation ????
Stock Exchanges opening when the bell rings show sharp changes in an instant - how? Can you please explain how at exactly 0955 hrs IST when the stock exchange bell rings the trading has already been done .... in that the BSE and NSE indices (both in India) have already risen or fallen as the case may be. Is it possible that we can enter our offers and bids even while the markets are closed. There is often a big difference from the previous day's close when the markets open at 0955.
WHY DID THE BSE SENSEX EXTEND GAINS TO MORE THAN 4% IN SPECULATION OF OF A HUGE BJP VICTORY? "The BSE Sensex extended gains to more than 4 percent on Tuesday afternoon, on speculation the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led group was gaining momentum in national elections. The BJP, which is perceived as market friendly, is emerging as the front runner in its race with the ruling Congress party-led coalition thanks to savvy alliance building. At 3:13 p.m. (0943 GMT), the 30-share BSE index was up 4.2 percent at 12,170.98 points, with 29 stocks gaining. The 50-share NSE index was up 3.7 percent at 3,686.70." Stocks listed in both NSE and BSE? Hi, Just assume a company goes for IPO with 5 lacs shares will be listed in both NSE and BSE. Is there any parameter which decideds how much will be listed in NSE and how much in BSE? If it's up to the applicant's choice what If the applicant wants to list all the shares in BSE nothing at NSE. If a stock can be bought at NSE and can be sold at BSE how come the indices are calculated at end of the day. Say, If I buy 100,000 stocks of company L&T in BSE and sell it in NSE wouldn't that affect the free-float-value of BSE (in Large stocks)? Thank you.
I am certain now that Indian stocks would crash beyond 11000 pts. what do you think? after my two previous prediction which came true to the last word, the BSE index yeasterday stabilized below 14000 mark. investors have lost crores of rupees. but this is nothing, considering the trend, this is not correction of Indian stock. I firmly believe that it will go down south. This is because of over all flight of Indian Rupees, certain policy of Finance Department as well as short term gainers are playing havoc. in short, bears are flourishing in Indian Stock Market. Your comments please.
How can I invest in India? I've recently caught up with an old friend from years back; he's always been an economics and finance wiz, and he's absolutely certain that the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (BSE Sensex) will hit $100,000 by 2025. Even adjusted for inflation, that's like triple returns in only 14 years. I have little faith in North American or European markets, so I think I want to be a part of that, but I have no experience investing. How can I invest in the BSE SENSEX from America?

Why did GOI increase minimum pubic holding to 25% and what would be its effect.? I don't know anything about the stock market, but the entire weekend I've been hearing that the government has increased the minimum public holding to 25% from 10%. What could be the effect of this on the share prices of the companies that need to give away 15% more shares to the public? What would be its effect on the BSE and NSE indexes?

Could you guess the fall out of the double-tax treaty signed with the Swiss government by India? See what Equitymaster known for its well-researched, unbiased and honest opinions on the Indian stock markets, has to say: Under the double-tax treaty signed with the Swiss government, the Swiss will now have to provide details to the Indian government on transactions involving Indians. It's thus no big surprise that black money is quickly exiting the Swiss Alps. But then where are these illegal piles of cash going? Well, it may be coming right back to India and sitting peacefully in our own backyard. And the amount involved could be as hefty as US$ 40-45 bn. But, this is just the figure for one year, 2010-11. The actual amount of black money entering the country could be a lot more. According to three analysts from Kotak Securites, who have been studying various data points, the numbers just don't add up. Here are a couple of examples: Official export data shows a 79% year-on-year (YoY) growth in engineering exports in 2010-11. However, exports by engineering companies in the BSE 500 index show just a 11% growth. In dollars terms, the difference is even starker. There appears to be a US$ 28 bn shortfall in exports. Now, the probability that this amount has come in through over-invoicing or fictitious exports is higher than that it came from tiny engineering companies which are not part of the BSE 500 index. Copper exports have also quadrupled from Rs 85 bn to Rs 367 bn. But, how is this possible in India, a country which does not as a practice export this mineral. China apparently bought the whole lot. So is the dragon nation also part of this public hoodwinking? Also, in 2010-11 foreign investor flows added up to US$ 22 bn, according to official data. The Kotak analysts did a cross-check with international sources like exchange-traded funds and EPFR Global. Their analysis shows that not more than US$ 4.5 bn came in to India. So, where did the other US$ 17.5 come from? http://in.finance.yahoo.com/news/This-mother-scams-India-equitymaster-3450665433.html Now do you realize the state we have got into? The article itself states in the end: India really needs to clean up its act. Else even the legitimate flows of capital into the country may dry up. Greater disclosures, a strong clampdown on corruption and a complete shakedown of government frauds need to take place. Anna Hazare's movement and his 12-day fast should not go in vain. And neither should India's reputation as an investment destination! What are your thoghts about the ''preparedness'' of the Govt to address the grim situation?
India Stock shares? Do shares listed on the India exchanges perform as good as they seem on the indices? I am a USA "potential" direct investor. I saw one company listing (either NSE or BSE) that went up 1000.00% in one day. What other India shares perform this well?
Source for market P/E data (and other market fundamentals)? I'm trying to find reliable sources of data on aggregate market fundamentals (in particular the market price-earnings ratio P/E), so that I can get market comparisons like the one at http://seekingalpha.com/article/48235-changes-in-global-equity-indices-and-p-e-ratios-since-2003 Some index providers and stock markets provide such data, such as Dow Jones 30 http://www.djindexes.com/mdsidx/inde...wAvgStats#fund or BSE (which is however quite incomplete) http://www.bseindia.com/about/st_key/index_ratios.asp but many don't. Is there a good (and ideally single) source?
what are the factors that affect the Sensex? The Sensex is an "index". An index is basically an indicator. It gives you a general idea about whether most of the stocks have gone up or most of the stocks have gone down. The Sensex is an indicator of all the major companies of the BSE. The Nifty is an indicator of all the major companies of the NSE. If the Sensex goes up, it means that the prices of the stocks of most of the major companies on the BSE have gone up. If the Sensex goes down, this tells you that the stock price of most of the major stocks on the BSE have gone down.
