When does a small cap or medium cap index fund equal large cap stock in terms of risk and reward? I do understand large cap index funds on average make about 10% and large cap stocks makes about 15% on average and for the record realestate 10%.
Indexing with VTI or VV+VB? Do you manage the allocation between large cap and small cap stocks? Do you manage the allocation between large cap and small cap stocks? Or do you let a good broard market index manage the allocation for you? You would want an index manage it for you if you want to save time, taxes, and commissions. Why would you want to manage it yourself? It seems to me that the correlation among the sizes of capitalization is too high to justify the extra work and costs. It's probably a more profitable use of my time to manage the allocation among stocks, bonds, and REIT rather than spending time on the details of rebalancing within my stock portfolio over the Morningstar 9 boxes. Anyone who studies modern portfolio theory? Correct me if I'm wrong. I want to be corrected so that I won't make costly mistakes. Thanks.

Which small-cap mutual fund would YOU pick? VISVX PENNX or NAESX? A few weeks ago I posted a question asking about low-expense, no-load, small-cap mutual funds which pay a DIVIDEND. The fine folks here offered a few suggestions and I've narrowed it down to 3 funds in which to invest $5,000 in my IRA. Now I want to know which fund you would choose. VISVX - Vangaurd It provides the largest dividend at 1.67% and has about 1000 stocks in its portfolio. Its a small-cap value index fund. It has also slightly underperformed compared to the next two funds. Its expense ratio is only .37% I'm leaning towards this one mainly because of the dividend. Yeah, I'm a sucker for dividends and reinvesting them. NAESX - Vangaurd This is a low cost (.31% expense ratio) small cap index fund with over 1500 stocks in its portfolio. It offers a .96% dividend and out performs VISVX. PENNX - Royce Funds This fund is named after me! Out performs the other two. Expense ratio is highest at .91% Dividend Yield is only .46% One other thing I like about this fund is that it's not an index fund (and u pay for it) and holds only 500 hand-picked stocks. Also it has some international presence. So there you have it. All three funds have something attractive about them. I just can't seem to decide which one to purchase. I was wondering if anyone out there had any feedback or opinion for me. Much appreciated!
Do you track your large-cap separately from small-cap stocks? Or do you simply allocate your assets between stocks and bonds and let an index/manager determine the sub-allocation by capitalizations (for stocks) and by maturities (for bonds)? What do you gain from tracking the sub-allocations? You can always fine-tune your risk/reward characteristics of your portfolio to maximize your potential reward within your comfort zone by adjusting your top-level allocations between stocks and bonds. If you do track your large-cap and small-cap stock allocation and rebalance them, I want to learn why you're doing it. Maybe I miss somthing. Teach me please.
Is now the right time to buy index funds? I' ve been saving up some money to invest in index funds such as REITS, Small cap stocks and Vanguard S&P 500. I' ve been contemplating if it is the right time to buy these funds now. I am new to investing and I keep hearing that market always goes in up and down cycles. When i checked out the charts for the index funds I mentioned, it seems there has already been a down cycle between 2002 - 2003. From 2003 onwards there has generally been an upward trend in the charts till now (2007). Is it ok to buy index funds now hoping that the market will continue to perform well or is there any imminent "down cycle" of the market?
Seeking opinions of financial people - What do you think of Vanguard Index Funds for Roth IRA retirement acct? Hi, I am looking to get your opinion on a Roth IRA that would be diversified equally within the following Vanguard Index Funds: The Roth is worth approximately $20,000. VFINX - Vanguard 500 Index NAESX - Vanguard Small Cap Index VEURX - Vanguard Eurpoean Stock Index VEIEX - Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index and I may also put some in the bond index VBMFX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Specifically I am looking for your answer to three questions: 1) What do you think of Index Funds in general for a Roth Retirement Account? (I have about 28 years until retirement, also this is supplemental savings to my 401k, my wife's 403b, and both our pensions) 2) What do you think of these Vanguard Funds specifically? 3) Are there any other Vanguard funds that you would recommend? 4) Any other miscellaneous advice or comments. Thanks for taking the time...I'm more inclined to select a best answer who cites sources to back up their opinions.

What should I do with my IRA? I worked briefly for a company about 6 years ago and managed to put about $550 into an IRA variable investment plan from Prudential. Since then, I have been freelancing and trying to figure out if I should keep paying into this IRA even though it would be unmatched now. In six years, the value of the IRA has gone up a measly $100. I know there was a small amount to begin with, but this seems like a very low rate of return. Plus the last couple years have been turbulent in the stock market. I've got Prudential Value Fund, Prudential Stock Index, Prudential Jennison, Prudential Small Cap Stock and Prudential Global. They seem to be taking $30 out every year as an annual fee. I want to start paying into this thing regularly, but I'm thinking maybe I'd be better off moving to another IRA or maybe a Roth IRA. Am I getting a bad deal with this particular plan? Forgot to mention I'm 29 and single.

Conventional wisdom on diversifying a portfolio? I have roughly 80% stocks vs 20% bonds, but nearly all of my stocks are in large cap growth or large blend funds like vanguard's S&P 500 index. How are you supposed to balance large/mid/small cap; and value vs. Blend vs. Growth? And are there indexes & index funds for mid and small cap stocks?

Answer to a Statistics problem on correlation...? This is the problem and I don't understand it. Can anyone help? "Mutual fund reports often give correlations to describe how the prices of different investments are related. You look at the correlations between three Fidelity funds and the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, which describes stocks of large U.S. companies. The three funds are Dividend Growth (stocks of large U.S. companies), Small Cap Stock (stocks of small U.S. companies), and Emerging Markets (stocks in developing countries). For 2003, the three correlations are r = 0.35, r = 0.81, and r = 0.98" Which correlation goes with each fund and why?

Just a few more details. I'm an Operations Analyst in the management development program at JPMorgan Chase. The firm does provide matching contributions so I will be taking advantage of that. Should I only contribute the maximum amount that they will match or is it ok to contribute more? Also, my rationale behind taking the Roth is this... I figure taxes will rise in the future so I would rather pay them now while they're lower so I can keep more money down the road. Also, the firm just sent me some books to look through so I can do my homework on the different funds that they offer. Thanks again for all the responses. I'm the first in my family to go to college and get a good job so I didn't have a lot of people to ask for advice. I really appreciate everybody's advice!

How to diversify - move out of S&P into small caps now? For the past few years I've had 80% of my assets in an S&P index and Growth index. This is my savings which I won't be spending for a long time. Wondering what the best strategy would be to diversify into small caps, international, and value stocks. All those have had a huge run up in the last few years (I missed it) and the S&P and Growth is where a lot of money is being invested now. Can you suggest a long-term strategy to reduce exposure in S&P and Growth and buy into the asset classes that are currently outperforming? Sell a % every few months and keep it in cash until there is another correction? Or simply dump and diversify now for the long haul? Or ride the S&P and Growth for a while longer to see if it has it's day?

Can anyone help me with my 401k? I am 32 years old and currently have 72k in my 401k (95k 1 year ago). My husband leaves the investing up to me and I can't say I know what I am doing. I currently have all our money in stocks. International ones. After it went down so much yesterday, I was thinking about cashing out. I really don't care about the 30% I would lose doing so, because I feel like I will lose it anyway when we fall into an even deeper depression. (Just my opinion) My husband had a better idea I think. He asked about putting it all in bonds so we don't lose the money on taxes cashing out. So getting to my question...If I did transfer ALL the money to bonds, is this federally insured? I know I am young, but at this point I want to play it very safe and don't care much about making more money. I would appreciate any suggestions. What happens if they go bankrupt? Is our 401k safe except for what has not vested? Thanks Steve D for your answer. There are a couple of things though... The 2035 fund did worse than the international fund I have for the past 1yr, 5yrs etc.. And if I did pull out the money, I have been making 3-4.5% interest on it from our online bank. I am pretty much looking for any option where my money is guaranteed. I didn't realize that bonds aren't insured so I won't take that option. Besides cashing out and investing at the bank, what would be another safe option? Are there any? The only way we saved so much is because my my husband's last company matched dollar for dollar up to 6% and I matched it cause it was free money. If it weren't for that, we wouldn't have much either. The company he is with now had a small match but no longer do it because of the economy. I was trying to be risky with putting it all into international because that had the greatest gain and wanted to make some extra money fast and then diversify again. According to the statistics given by the investing firm I'm with, I did pretty well losing the least that I could. (Except that the whole market did awful) MVD 34 No offense taken. I truly understand where you are coming from and I respect that. My husband and I have been discussing our options and have narrowed it down: (Due to fact that we think the market is going to fall a lot more) We will either stop putting the 3% in from each check and hope the market doesn't fall a lot or will cash out the 401k and put it into an online savings account. If I choose to leave it in the 401k I will most likely do as you suggested and just put it into the Freedom fund and forget about it.
Why are Vanguard expense ratios on their website different from in their print ads? I received an advertisement (ACOPIDX_0509) by U.S. mail from Vanguard that compared "Vanguard's average index fund cost" to "Industry average index fund cost". The ad said it was "comparing Vanguard's average index fund expense ratio of 0.15% to the industry average.". Vanguard's website (https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/vanguard/all?sort=name&sortorder=asc#hist=upperTB%3AattrTBI%3A%3AlowerTB%3AgenTBI) says that all their index funds have expense ratios from 0.18% (500 Index and Total Stock Market Index) to 0.60% (FTSE All-World ex-US Small-Cap Index). If all the funds have expense ratios of 0.18% or more, how can the average be only 0.15%? In other words, how can the average be less than any of the numbers being averaged?
Is this Vanguard advertisement misleading/dishonest? I received an advertisement (ACOPIDX_0509) by U.S. mail from Vanguard that compared "Vanguard's average index fund cost" to "Industry average index fund cost". The advertisement indicated what costs an investor would experience based on "Vanguard's average index fund expense ratio of 0.15% to the industry average.". However, investor shares of all Vanguard index funds have expense ratios from 0.18% (500 Index and Total Stock Market Index) to 0.60% (FTSE All-World ex-US Small-Cap Index). The advertised average was skewed by the inclusion of institutional shares that are not available to the general public. In other words, the actual cost to an individual investor (based on the expense ratios of Vanguard investor shares) would be more than the amount stated in the advertisement. Was using the overall average expense ratio, instead of the investor shares expense ratio, in the advertisement the right thing to do? the wrong thing, but legal? illegal?

I'm trying to invest in my 401K... I'm not sure what I'm doing please help? I'm 20 years old and I'll admit I have no idea what any of this stuff means. All I know is that people have 401Ks and its a good thing. I have like 14 options to choose from to invest in I guess. I really have no idea about any of this stuff. I tried to search online the benefits of a 401K and the only thing I can find is that its good because you don't have to pay taxes.. I don't understand tho.. Do I loose money if I invest in it? For the experts, how's this looking for Vanguard Index portfolio? Hi everyone, I'm 25 and realized how important it is to start investing at a young age...I've heard good things about Vanguard Index funds due to their low costs...I've decided to put my money in the following funds and ETFs accordingly and adding little every month (I have a Vanguard account to avoid commission fees). VTSMX (Total Stock Market): $3000 - I picked this one over the big VFINX because this one has more diversification (3500 stocks vs 500) plus already has the 500 stocks VFINX has. Same expense at 0.15%. VGTSX (Total International Stock): $3000 Expense 0.27% NAESX (Small-Cap): $3000 Expense 0.22% VGSIX (Real estate investment trusts): $3000 Expense 0.20% ETFS Materials (VAW) $1000 Expense 0.22% Emerging Markets (VWO) $1000 Expense 0.25% Utilities (VPU) $1000 Expense 0.22% Energy (VDE) $1000 Expense 0.22% Some of the ETF related Index funds (i.e. emerging markets) have purchase fees of $750 and for the ETF it's free so I went this way. I think this is pretty diversified. Also, I will be investing some in individual stocks but only after I have mastered the art of individual stock investing. For now, index funds are the best way to go. Can I get your thoughts on this portfolio? Thanks in advance!! :) I've also added $5000 to my Roth IRA account at Vanguard for the Target Retirement 2050 Fund. Thank you.

What is your school of thought for investing? Currently, I am reading two books on investing of opposite strategies. On one hand, I am reading Jim Cramer's Real Money book where he believes the market is not 100% efficient and there is money to be made that beats the indexes by a decent return. Year after year, these are found in the small cap, less discussed stocks. On the other hand, I am reading "A Random Walk Down Wallstreet," which discusses investing behavior and how people through the centuries have been burnt by "castles in the sky." This book recommends value investing the Warren Buffet way in ETF's, etc. Warren Buffet said in his 2005 letter (paraphrased), "Investors have had a string of good returns but have learned any number multiplied by zero equals zero." Basically, I am just looking for some conversation on which school of thought you believe in and why. Thanks in advance and I apologize for any spelling/grammar errors. Ed, what would I do without you.
Ultimate Vanguard portfolio buy and hold? I've also added $5300 to Vanguard's Target 2050 Retirement Fund. Can I get your thoughts on this portfolio? Thanks in advance!! :)

Are these good investment choices for 401(k)? HI, My company has a 401(k) with Fidelity, and quite honestly, I have no idea what I am doing in terms of selecting what to invest in. Last year, I contributed around 5,000 and lost around 1,600 dollars because of the market, which was to be expected. My question is, I just randomly picked these choices to invest in...is there a better strategy I could be using? Should I invest more in bonds then stocks? Should I just put it all into a fund that manages it for you with a goal of retiring at a certain age/year? Here are my investments currently: Investment Option Stock Investments LARGE CAP FID BLUE CHIP GROWTH 25% MID-CAP SPTN EXTND MKT INDEX 15% SMALL CAP NB GENESIS - INST CL 15% INTERNATIONAL AF EUROPAC GRTH R4 15% Blended Fund Investments FID FREEDOM 2035 30% Total 100%

Does one large blend fund make more sense than mixing a large growth and a large value fund? I read recently that only 6% of all U.S. stocks are considered "large-cap". Since there are so few large-cap stocks compared to small and mid caps, and since there seems to be a lot of overlap between even large value and large growth funds, does it make more sense to just have one big chunk of change in a cheap S&P 500 index fund rather than two smaller chunks in separate growth and value funds? This pertains to a 401k, by the way.
